Is it rising damp or condensation?
These two are constantly confused, yet they behave very differently and need entirely different remedies.
Two very different problems
Rising damp involves ground moisture rising through the structure where there is no effective damp-proof course. Condensation is airborne moisture settling on cold surfaces. They look similar on a wall but have nothing in common underneath.
Tell-tale signs of condensation
Condensation tends to appear on cold surfaces, around windows and reveals, in unventilated corners and behind furniture on external walls. It is usually worse in winter and often accompanied by black spot mould.
Tell-tale signs of rising damp
Genuine rising damp shows a low-level band of moisture, generally to around a metre, with a tide-mark and hygroscopic salts drawn from the ground. It does not appear high on a wall or on internal partitions away from the ground.
